69. Frist Fridays

On the last Friday of each month, May-August, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts throws a party – Frist Fridays. There’s live music on the lawn out back, light snacks and drinks, and a doorway to the exhibits in the galleries.

July 27 – The Band of Heathens
August 31 – The Dynamites & Charles Walker

It’s a great night out to relieve the week and enjoy food, drink, music and art – all in one place. Admission is $10. Not a bad way to start the weekend.

68. The First “In The Round”

On March 29, 1985, the first “In The Round” was held featuring Thom Schuyler, Fred Knobloch, Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet. Fred and Don had been out drinking, came up with the idea and said, “let’s put four chairs in the middle of the room, facing each other, turn around the lights, and see what happens,” (Kurland, 2002). Turns out this was a huge hit – most of the songwriter shows at Bluebird and around Nashville are “In The Round” today. And Schuyler, Knobloch and Schlitz still play together “In the Round” with Jelly Roll Johnson at the Bluebird pretty frequently. You should definitely check it out if you haven’t yet.

67. The Singing Circle with Annie Sellick

Amazing jazz vocalist, Annie Sellick, is hosting The Singing Circle this Sunday, May 20 at Bongo Java After Hours Theatre. All voices are welcome. It’s a workshop of improvisational “singing games” to explore sound, scales, ear-training, creativity, range and harmony. Learn the notes from the lovely Annie Sellick. Workshops run 1-4:30pm and are $25. The Theatre is upstairs from Bongo Java at 2007 Belmont Boulevard.

66. Taylor Swift Pledges $4 Million to Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

Grammy-award winner and Nashville resident Taylor Swift has pledged $4 million to fund a new education center at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The new space will feature three classrooms and a state-of-the-art children’s exhibit gallery. Swift’s gift is the largest in the museum’s 45-year history – the new, 7500-square-foot space will be called the Taylor Swift Education Center and is scheduled to open in early 2014.

She’s got it. She’s giving it back.

65. Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum Anniversary

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum opened on Music Row in 1967. It grew out of its original digs and closed in 2000. The new building in downtown Nashville celebrated its grand opening at 5th & Demonbreun on May 17, 2001 – 11 years ago today. The $37 million landmark houses historic video and audio clips, music, dynamic exhibits, state-of-the-art design, live performances and programs, a store, restaurant, beautiful public spaces and an unforgettable experience – no matter your taste in music. And they’re getting bigger!

Nashville welcomes travelers into town with live music at the airport. And sends them off with our song in their heads. The airport is not just a place to fly into or out of. 63. Brenda Lee

Brenda Lee did two command performances for Queen Elizabeth before the age of 20, sold over a hundred million records, charted in more categories – including pop, rhythm & blues, rock, easy listening and country – than any other women in the history of recorded music, and is the only woman in history to be inducted into both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.

61. Gospel Music Association

The Gospel Music Association is based right here in Music City. The GMA was founded in 1964 and is dedicated to supporting, promoting and celebrating gospel music of all kinds, including pop, rock, praise & worship, black gospel, R&B, hip hop, Southern gospel and country. They produce the GMA Dove Awards and IMMERSE each year. The Gospel Music Association Foundation preserves gospel music history and honors those music legends through the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. They’ve recently announced the newest class of inductees to the Hall of Fame: Aretha Franklin, Ricky Skaggs, Dallas Holm, The Hoppers, Love Song and Rex Humbard. The induction ceremony will take place on August 14, 2012 at Trinity Music City Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. The GMA is in Music City.

60. Nashville Music Garden

Get outside and smell the roses. The Nashville Music Garden is located at Walk of Fame Park, between the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Country Music Hall of Fame and Bridgestone Arena on the Music Mile. Much like the Walk of Fame pays tribute to the music that has made Music City, the Nashville Music Garden does so through the gorgeous display of more than 6 dozen varieties of roses and daylilies named in honor of the music and artists synonymous with Nashville. You can see roses like Coal Miner’s Daughter, Dolly Parton, Elvis, Kitty Wells, Little Jimmy Dickens, Reba McEntire, Patsy cline, Ring of Fire and Pretty Woman. Daylilies are named for Barbara Mandrell, Hank Williams, Leonard Bernstein and Nashville Ballet, among others. And this is the perfect time of year to see everything in bloom. So pretty. 2700 square feet of so pretty.
