291.2. Tennessee State Capitol

The Tennessee State Capitol is one of the oldest working capitol buildings in the nation. It first opened in 1859 and still stands much as it did then. Architect William Strickland designed the building. When he died during construction, he was buried in the north facade of the Capitol. President and Mrs. James K. Polk are also buried on Capitol grounds. Statues stand on the grounds honoring Sam Davis, Sgt. Alvin York and Presidents Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. Guided tours of the Capitol are offered Monday-Friday at 9, 10 and 11am and 1, 2 and 3pm.
