263. Carnton Plantation & Battlefield

Carnton Plantation is one of Tennessee’s historic treasures. Not far from Nashville, the plantation is the location of the famous Battle of Franklin that occurred on November 30, 1864. For five hours the battle raged on and in the aftermath nearly 10,000 Americans were killed, wounded or missing. The Carnton Plantation house was owned by John and Carrie McGavock and during the battle it housed the largest Confederate field hospital. The McGavocks donated over 2 acres of their land to bury the soldiers that died there. This house is also the subject of the New York Times bestselling novel The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks.

November 19-21, head over to the Carnton Plantation for Blue and Gray Days, where there will be reenactments, period vendors, tintype photo booth and more. For more information, visit the Carnton Plantation website.
