32. Belmont Mansion

Belmont Mansion, located on the Belmont University campus, was home to one of the South’s most prominent women, Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen Cheatham. Left alone during the Civil War, Adelicia secretly negotiated agreements with both Union and Confederate authorities to allow her cotton bales to be sold. This move single-handedly saved her precious 180-acre estate from being demolished during the war and kept the grounds amazingly intact. The gazebo’s that sit on Belmont University campus were once home to a zoo of animals including monkeys, peacocks, singing birds, alligators and a bear house- from which the University pulled inspiration for their mascot the bruin.

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, the Belmont Mansion is a jewel among the crowded Nashville landscape. Belmont Mansion is the largest house museum in Tennessee and one of the few nineteenth century homes whose history revolves around the life of a woman. Be sure to walk the grounds as most of the gardens are intact and beginning to bloom!
